A cast lead weight of uncertain date, but probably Medieval or post-Medieval, AD 1200 - 1800. It is flat and cast in the shape of a fish. The body is a pointed oval, tapering towards one end before flaring slightly to form the tail. In the centre of the tail is a shallow, transverse notch and in the forward end of the body is a circular perforation representing the eye. There is no decoration and no indication that there was ever a suspension loop of any kind. Two notches are recent damage. The weight is 66.7mm long, 22.5mm wide and 7.7mm thick. It weighs 76.5gm (2.75oz)
A small number of fish shaped weights can be found on the database though none is an exact parallel for this weight. See for example records YORYM-BFD301 and LVPL-244DEA. It is possibly that this weight was used for weighting a fishing line and it could be more recent in date.
