HOOKED TAG

Unique ID: HAMP-64B9C2

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An Early Post-Medieval (1500-1700) copper alloy single sharp-hooked tag of Read's Class E Type 3 (circular/sub-circular), rather worn and missing all of its original patina.
The circular plate has a central pellet surrounded by a circular recess, flanked all the way round (except for the edge where the loop projects) by a ring of moulded pellets. Four of these are larger, two beneath the arms of the projecting loop and at the widest point of the object.
The integral attachment loop is sub-rectangular in shape and measures 12.73mm wide (internal 7.41mm). It is very worn and thin. There is a two-dimensional (flat to the reverse) moulded boss at the juncture of plate and hook. The hook bends back on itself to the reverse of the object.
The metal is a purplish-brown in colour with patches of a brighter green corrosion product. The object measures 27.54mm in length, 14.26mm in max.width, 8.64mm in depth and weighs 1.95g.

Notes:

There is no direct parallel in Read (2008), but a similar openwork tag can be seen (p.98 no. 368).
