Part of a copper-alloy hinged strap fitting, probably dating from the Roman period.
At one end of the piece are two opposing lugs, separated by a central gap, their opposing circular perforations containing iron corrosion from a now-missing axis bar. Above this are the remains of an openwork frame with curved sides are one surviving 'C-shaped' aperture.
Width: 26.9mm; length: 16.2mm; thickness: 6.2mm. Weight: 3.38g.
This is probably part of a Roman cavalry strap fitting, a similar example of which is Appels and Laycock Fig. AA12.12 (2007: 103). Another possibility, albeit less likely, is that this is a post-Medieval furniture fitting.
