Square double-sided brass coin weight for an Angel (11 shillings) of James I 1603-25.14mm square and 3.5mm thick. Weight 4.57g. (70.60gn.).
The obverse has a crowned bust right within a beaded circle. Inscription IR in left field, BRI in right field (James I Britannia).
The reverse has a royal crown within a beaded cicle. At each side of the base of the crown is a fleur de lis. Below the crown is an inscription XIS - 11 shillings 1 Angel). There is also a fleur de lis below the I in the inscription. In the top left hand corner of the reverse is an official counterstamp or verification mark in the form of a crowned I for James I. The sides of the weight are slightly bevelled, The obverse side is the larger. The sides have a number of file marks. Issued between 1604 and 1619 (Withers P. and Withers B. R. 1995).
