A three-sided sheet metal aluminium case measuring 60.61mm by 41.90mm by 20.14mm thick. The case is probably a matchbox holder and probably dates to to the latter period of the First World War; however a date earlier in the war cannot be ruled out. The decoration is all carried out using a zigzag technique.

On the spine, within a frame, is the name YPRES in capitals.

One side is decorated with a symmetrical branching foliate design with leaves and quatrefoils, all within a box frame.

The other side bears a pair of rifles and crossed flags; one flag is the Union Flag and the other is the American Stars and Stripes. Above the crossed rifles is a crown with lines radiating from it. The crown separates the words WORLD WAR in capitals. This design is also held within a box frame.

The case appears to be an example of 'Trench Art' and may have been manufactured from a mess tin.
