Lilly Chitty Collection

An Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged arrowhead (2,500 to 1,500 BC), dark grey in colour.

This piece is sub-triangular in plan and sub-elliptical in section. The seventh of 10 pieces, the number "7" is written in brio on a small label stuck to the ventral face of this piece. Most likely to be attributed to the Conygar Hill typology of barbed and tanged arrowheads, this small piece has been bificially worked and is missing one of its barbs. The remaining barb is squared yet slightly rounded, and it can be assumed that the missing opposing barb would have shared almost identical attributes. The tang possesses similar features - it is squared but has a slightly rounded profile. It can be assumed that this arrowhead once possessed a sharp point, and this may have been broken in use as there is a very small point of percussion visible on the remaining tip. The "Conygar Hill" typology attributed to this piece is done so reluctantly, as these types were classified according to arrowheads found in Ireland. The typical arrowheads in the West Midlands are significantly smaller.

This piece weighs 1.2 grams, measuring 24mm in length, 18.2mm in width, and 4.3mm in thickness.
