Incomplete, worn and corroded medieval gilt copper alloy mount, strap fitting or buckle plate, possibly from harness, rectangular plate (described as if aligned vertically to match the decoration) has a cast or stamped elongated heater-shaped field bearing a lion rampant on a field of stamped annulets, and with traces of possible bordering pellets. The upper end (above the top edge of the shield) is broken across one of two rivet-holes, the other rivet-hole with dome-headed copper alloy rivet, before the remains of a curled-over projection (possibly one of a pair of loops). The other end is recessed, tapers and has a bent and broken terminal. Width 21.5mm. Extant length/height 52mm. 1mm thick. The shield is very close that on a strap fitting from Stiffkey (Norfolk HER 1867), perhaps mould/stamp identical. Early 13th century.
