Fragment of a post medieval lead alnage or subsidy cloth seal. Part of a four-disc seal probably from the series featuring a monarch's head. The remaining section is the inner disc of a conjoined pair with part of the rectangular tab with joined the pairs on one side, now bent backwards. The remaining disc has a harp with I over 4 to the left and possibly an unclear symbol to the right all within a double border of a plain line within a pellet border. It measures 14.2mm wide by 13.2mm long, 1.1 mm thick excluding the tab and weighs 1.54g.
Egan (1994, 60) states 'the relief designs on these alnage seals (16th-18th century seals that show tax has been paid) are characterised by fine detail resulting from well-engraved dies'. Similar examples published by Egan and on this database, such as SUSS-C4E0B8, from the later 17th century and early 18th century are all of a crowned harp suggesting this example with the uncrowned harp may be earlier or later than than that period.
