An incomplete copper alloy finger ring with moulded decoration, of medieval dating (AD 1200 to AD 1500).

The finger ring consists of a copper alloy hoop with moulded decoration. It has a D shaped cross section with a prominent ridge on the external surface. This central ridge is 2.6mm wide and is flanked by two parallel recessed incomplete edges. The central ridge demonstrates a regular pattern of short vertical incised grooves.

The internal surface of the ring exhibits a large number of file marks. No inscription appears to be present.

The ring measures: 18.4 mm external diameter, 11.5 mm internal diameter, 3.6 mm width and 3.8 mm thick. It weighs 2.4 grams.

The ring is a mid green colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement, whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface.

Several comparative examples have been recorded. WMID-6296C3 is of a similar style, although the decoration is slightly different, was recovered from a site in Staffordshire as well. Excavations in London have turned up similar examples, with a similar style of decoration but without the prominent ridge. (Pritchard, 2002, p332, examples 1627 and 1629). The two examples from London came from contexts dated to the 15th Century.
