UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT

Unique ID: SF-70527E

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete copper-alloy unidentified conical object of possible Roman date. Only the terminal? of the object survives, the remainder of the object is missing due to old breaks, now worn.

The base is circular and expanded. It narrows to a circumferential groove waist 6.59mm in width before expanding to the now missing top of the object and terminating in old breaks.

This object measures 24.40mm in diameter, 21.75mm in height, 52.97g in weight.

It is possibly a crest-holder from a Roman legionary helmet ('Coolus' type) of the 1st century AD. If it is one of these similar helmet crest holders have been found at Chichester (Bishop and Coulston 1993, 94-95, fig 58, no 2) and recorded on the PAS database (SF-D21822).
