An incomplete cast copper alloy late Iron Age to early Roman strap union of Taylor and Brailsford's (1985:247) Type 1.2. The strap union is formed of two circular conjoined openwork elements arranged like a figure of eight. They are flat on the underside and domed on top. There is the remains of the strap bars eminating from the centre of each side of the figure of eight, with one strap bar surviving to a length of 9.1mm. These studs would have formed a U-shaped on either side, through which a strap could be fed and secured.Several examples are illustrated in Taylor and Brailsford (1985:251 Fig. 2, no 2). This type (Type 1) is found predominantly in the south and along the east coast of the country, and several have been recorded on the PAS database (see SUSS-2461E8, HAMP-5287B5, SUR-9A34B7 and ESS-77B292 for example). These were most probably used for horse harnesses although possibly also for personal dress (Taylor & Brailsford 1985:270-271).
