A cast lead alloy weight dating from the Roman to the Post-Medieval period, (43-1700). The object is circular in plan and trapezoidal in cross-section. One face is stamped with the Roman numeral I, while the opposite face is undecorated. The object has a light white patina and weighs 26.8g.
Lead weights are common throughout the Medieval and Post-Medieval period. Biggs, N. & Withers, P. (2000) note that weights of this type with numerals are consistent with the Roman weight-system as well as the averdepois system, thus they could equally be 16th century. Given the growing number of these lead weights being found in the North West, it is more probable that these weights are significantly later in date (17th to 18th Centuries AD).
