An incomplete copper alloy buckle plate of medieval date. The plate is formed from a single rectangular sheet of metal which is broken along one edge at which it would have looped over the strap bar of the buckle proper. A single rivet hole is present centrally at the opposite end. The upper surface of the plate is decorated with a right facing zoomorphic design passant, possibly a griffin with an eagle-like head, lion-like body and wings extending from its back. The reverse of the buckle plate is flat and undecorated.

The metal has a dark greenish-brown patina and is worn. The plate is 22.9mm long, 19.1mm wide, 1.8mm thick and weighs 3g.

Similar examples depicting lions can be seen in Egan and Pritchard, p.111, fig.72 and are dated to the 13th century.
