BODKIN

Unique ID: ESS-DDB4A7

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Fragment of a dress-pin of bodkin type. The fragment comprises of the head and top of the upper shaft, whilst the lower shaft and pointed tip is lost due to old breaks. The head bears a rounded terminal, forming an ear-scoop, from which extends a pointed oval section with open centre or 'eye'. Below the eye is a lateral rectangular tab formed of two raised ridges. Below this is a rounded body section bearing an incised flower design. A second double ridge rectangular panel is located below the flower followed by another openwork section, this time more circular. The patterning is the same on both sides of the head.

The upper shaft extends from the circular openwork section formed of a rectangular plate with a central rectangular slot resulting in two projections. The pin is broken laterally close to the start of the shaft, with only one projecting arm surviving. This is covered with rocker arm incised decoration on both sides.
