FINGER RING

A complete but disorted gold 'posy' finger ring of post-medieval date. The finger ring has a thin D-sectioned band, plain on the external surface and with an inscription internally that reads 'Honoured for thy vertue' [sic]. This is followed by a makers mark, a monogram of WM in an oval field (this is located at the bend in the ring and is difficult to photograph). The finger ring is similar to an example in Oman (1974) plate 58, 1650 - 1700, and also examples in Grimwade (1982) from 1703 and 1705, although none are an exact likeness and no record of this maker's mark could be found in this literature. c. AD 1625 - 18th century. The precious metal content of this item (being over 10%) qualifies it as treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996, however it is impossible to say definitively that it dates to pre-1714, and therefore does not qualify as Treasure. Internal diameter 20mm maximum, thickness 0.84mm, weight 1.5 grams.
