The brooch is incomplete, missing the spring and catch-plate (with a length of 58.0mm, a surviving depth of 23.5mm and a weight of 17.2g). The missing spring was secured around a central, pierced lug with the chord beneath and the rear of the head is concave. The trumpet-head is oval (15.2mm high and 16.5mm wide) and there is some damage to its apex, which is undecorated and possibly originally incorporated an integral chain-loop. The upper-bow is of D-shaped section and has cast decoration comprising a trumpet-scroll on each side. At the centre is a double rib, flanked by ribs emanating from the trumpet-scrolls. It is possible that the mouldings on the upper-bow are representative of a stylised animal head, possibly a horse or similar. The mid-bow has a button of disc form (12.0mm wide and 10.4mm deep), enhanced with a notched central rib. Notched ribs also divide the button from the upper-bow and leg. All three ribs continue on the rear of the bow. The leg is near-straight and is of triangular section, with straight convergent sides. The leg appears to have had a linear central rib, enhanced with a central groove and each side is decorated with an undulating rib, defining sub-triangular cells against a rib on the rear side. The base of the leg is defined by a further knurled rib, which again continues on the rear. The catch-plate is largely lost and survives as a flange at the centre of the rear of the leg. The foot is of knobbed form (9.5mm diameter) and the underside has a central pellet. The surface has a mid to dark-green patina.
