Copper alloy finger-ring, probably a 'snake ring' of Roman date

The ring is of circular, coiled form and is complete with two coils (giving a maximum width of 13.4mm, an external diameter of 25.9mm, an internal diameter of 19.7mm and a weight of 15.1g). The hoop is of sub-rectangular section with a consistent thickness (of 2.8mm) and is widest at its midpoint (6.0mm), gradually narrowing towards the terminals. The sides of the terminals narrow more sharply, one terminal has a linear narrowing (6mm from the end) while the other terminal has a more gradual taper to a rounded end. It may be suggested that the linear, sharp taper may be a devolved head while the tail is rounded. The surface is heavily-corroded and no applied decoration is evident. The surface has a brown patina with areas of green corrosion.

The lack of diagnostic features on the ring makes any confident identification difficult however the general form is consistent with a devolved form of coiled 'snake-ring', similar to Roman period examples.
