A gold hoop or ring of medieval date from a stratified archaeological excavation of a priory. Treasure case 2014 T849. Found around the waist of a female inhumation (presumably that of a nun). This item may have been attached to a garment at burial, or alternatively the excavators suggest it may have been a symbolic 'wedding' ring of a nun or prioress, showing their marriage to God, and kept in a purse about the waist. The gold ring measures 18mm in diamater and is 1mm thick. It weighs 1 gram. Archaeological context number 590.
Objects associated with the finger ring and burial include: a coffin, 2 Roman pottery shards, 4 iron nails, 1 copper alloy shroud pin, 7 inlaid floor tiles, 1 plain floor tile, 4 glazed roof tiles, 4 peg roof tiles and 1 ridge tile.
Notes:
The priory was founded in c. AD 1110 and was closed under Henry VIII in AD 1525.
