Modern wood and ferrous pistol of 19th century date
The pistol was of percussion type with folding trigger and is complete (with an overall length of 160mm and a weight of 241.2g). The pistol was made by Freeman of London and is of 12mm (0.5 inch) calibre. The barrel is ferrous (with a length of 58mm and an external diameter of 18 - 19mm). The stock has incised geometric decoration around a diagonal oval containing the maker's name. The wooden handle is rectangular sectioned and has a rounded butt. The underside of the stock also has incised floral decoration. The trigger is currently folded, almost flush with the underside of the stock. The trigger would drop down when the now corroded hammer is pulled back. Ferrous screws on the side and underside of the stock appear to be of relatively recent date and are far less corroded.
The pistol was likely to have been made in the mid-19th century but may have been modified more recently. The iron corrosion within a marine environment may suggests a loss within the last c. 20 years.
