Cast copper alloy sword scabbard chape, that is a waisted keyhole chape in plan, and sub-rectangular in profile and section. The upper edge is serrated, and below this is a raised rectangular frame with a band of openwork in the form of four diamonds with it. The frame is bordered by a transverse ridge with incised oblique lines making it appear like ropework. The lower section of the front plate is circular with radiating ridges from the centre. Below this section is a rounded basal knop. The back plate of the chape is missing and there are taces of black lacquer on the outer face of the chape, where the decoration is raised.
Bailey (1997) illustrates a similar scabbard chape on pages 86-7, which is dated from the 16th century.
Ward Perkins (1993) in the London Museum Medieval Catalogue 1940 illustrates a similar scabbard chape in Plate LXXX, no.12, and also Type III on page 285, fig.87, which is dated from the late 15th to the 16th century.
Read (2001) illustrates a similarly waisted chape with openwork on page 90, fig.58, no.685, which is dated from the late 15th to the 16th century.
