UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT

Unique ID: WILT-F47482

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A copper alloy unidentified object of possible medieval date. The object appears to be incomplete and comprises a sharp spike 18.28mm long which broadens out into flanges 20.86mm wide. Above the flanges, the spike continues for 25.15mm and broadens to 17.73mm. The back of the object is similarly configured except that at the top 13.46mm from the flanges it curves forward into a lip and then back into a curve up to the front. It appears that the top of the front of the pin is incomplete and it may have extended into the section that curved round to retain the pin over a bar or it extended back to create a plate for attachment possibly to a strap allowing the spike to rotate. The object is undecorated. This object bears some similarity to a tongue from an early medieval Anglo-Saxon buckle possibly a 'shield-on-tongue' type which is in the shape of a violin or guitar.
