An incomplete lead or lead alloy weight, of probable Medieval dating (AD 1300 to AD 1550).
The weight is an thick disc, It is sub rectangular in shape. Both sides are flat. The front has been decorated with a long cross design with a folded outside rim. The remains of an iron suspension loop is present running through the centre of the weight. The base is undecorated.
It measures 50.4 mm in length, 42.7 mm wide and 12.9 mm thick. It weighs 219.7 g (7.75 oz).
The weight is light to mid grey colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.
Weights of this style are frequently encountered, and commonly thought to be of Medieval dating. Lead weights, due to be a functional artefact, do change little in style over time, and as such can be hard to date accurately. Little study has been done to date on typological studies to confirm the dating of different styles. However it is reasonable to assume that this weight is probably Medieval in dating.
