A lead object, possibly a weight with a broad Roman to post-medieval date range. The object is flat and circular in shape with a marginal groove in the section of the circumference. This gives the object the appearance of being two discs of lead sandwiched together. The upper surface of the object is stamped with a monogram of which only the letter 'P' is clearly visible. The object measures 22mm in diameter and 4mm in thickness. Roger Tomlin notes: 'With its exaggerated horizontal serifs, the letter is not obviously Roman, although the possiblity cannot be excluded. The weight would be a little more than one Roman semuncia (half-ounce) but there is no annotation anything like it in RIB II.2, 2412 (Weights).
If Roman, this weight could be classified as a Tyrell (2015) Type C1: a disc-shaped weight with no detectable method of suspension, and if used for weighing may have been used with pan balances. Some of this type may have been used as counters.
