A Late Bronze Age, gold penannular ring. The penannular ring has a roughly oval cross-section, the inner surface being flattened. The terminals are flat. The ring has alternate stripes of yellow and paler gold; this decorative banding has been considerably worn on each face and on the angles of the flattened inner surface. Examination of the surfaces of the terminals indicates that the piece probably comprises a gold wrapping over a core of different material; in such cases this is frequently copper alloy. The presence of a base metal core was subsequently confirmed in the laboratory. Maximum external diameter 18mm; maximum thickness of hoop 6mm; weight 9.61 grams. This penannular ring is a well-known Late Bronze Age type, decorative in character and dating to circa 1150-750BC. This ring is similar to another example (2002/T191).
