A Post Medieval (c. 1500 to 1800) lead token: The design consists of a high-relief heralldic shield with cross hatching in the upper border and chevrons on the body of the shield. The reverse is decorated with the initial CR. The surface is a matte oxidised mottled light cream and grey colour. The tokens measure 27.3mm diameter, and weighs 7.7g.
The heraldic design is a Powell Type 16 and the initials are Powell Type 2.
Lead tokens had a wide variety of potential uses such as use as tallies, gaming pieces, tickets, weights, etc. and are believed to have been locally produced; they are therefore difficult to date precisely. Those carrying initials are generally deemed to be Post Medieval in date (1500-1850 AD), those which seem to mimic Medieval penny designs are deemed to be Medieval, the remainder which carry stylised designs remain difficult to date but the majority are probably Post Medieval in date c.1500-1800.
