A fragment of Roman (AD 50-150) copper alloy T-shaped brooch (Colchester derivative) with hinge mechanism, missing most of one wing, the lower bow and catchplate, and the pin. The brooch measures 20.12mm in incomplete length and weighs 5.75g.
The tubular wings span an incomplete 27.01mm. Originally, they would have spanned c.36mm. To the front, top and underside they are decorated with a narrow but thickened band encircling the surviving open end and projecting forwards. This is flanked by two narrow ribs and corresponding grooves to either side. At the junction with the bow to both sides is an oblique rib. To the reverse there is no decoration and an iron axis bar is visible at the central slot for the pin (missing) and at either end. The wings measure c.4.5mm in diameter, the surviving end 5.1mm diameter.
The bow projects from the top and front of the wings in a shallow curve, c-shaped in cross-section and being hollow to the reverse. It narrows from 12.01mm wide below the wings to 8.13mm wide at the recent-ish jagged break. The front of the bow is decorated with three vertical ribs arranged at the centre, with corresponding grooves between.
