An incomplete Roman cast copper-alloy and tinned Hod Hill brooch (AD 43-75).

The head of the brooch is turned over in a forwards direction to form tubular wings to accommodate an axis bar. Part of one wing is missing. Mid-way along the length of the wings is a slot for the pin which is also missing. Within the surviving part of the wings at one side are the vestigial remains of an iron axis bar. The bow is moulded at the front, rectangular in plan and flat at the rear. The moulded decoration consists of a wide central vertical rib flanked on either side by a smaller rib and an outer groove. Below the rectangular part are three transverse moulded ribs that do not extend around to the rear face. The central rib is larger than the others. There is a further similar transverse rib slightly lower down. The catch-plate is incomplete as the curled-over part that secured the pin is missing. It is perforated with a circular hole, 1.6mm in diameter and has a rounded protruding foot knob.

This brooch is corroded and has traces of a green patina with patches of tinning at the front. There are flecks of iron staing at the front and rear. Since discovery, a break has occurred between the bow and leg.

Height: 42.6mm; width of wings: 13.1mm; width of bow at the top: 8.6mm; maximum thickness of bow: 3.2mm. Weight: 4.87g.
