An incomplete copper alloy button and loop fastener of Roman date. The head is pointed ovate in plan with a raised circular boss within a circumferential recess. The shank extends straight down from the reverse of the head, which is concaved, and bends at 90 degrees before splitting in to two broken an worn terminals which represent the remains of the attachment loop. The orientation of the shank results in the head and loop being on different plains.
The metal has a dark brownish-green patina and is worn. The button and loop fastener is 33.4mm long, 15.3mm wide, 13.7mm thick and weighs 7.8g.
Button and loop fasteners such as this are of Wild's Class III and date to the late 1st to 2nd century AD.
