A copper alloy pointed oval seal matrix dating to the medieval period, c. AD 1200 to AD 1400.
The object is a pointed oval or vessica shape in plan and flat with the remains of an integral lug set on a central rib along the longitudinal axis of the reverse. The front of the object bears a motif and legend however it is too worn to be read or identified.
Sealing was used for authenticating documents for around 300 years in medieval Britain. Pointed oval shaped seals such as this were popular during the 13th century when they were particularly preferred by women (Harvey and McGuinness, 1996: 79-88).
