Iron Age copper alloy bow brooch of Colchester-one-piece type and of 1st century AD date
The brooch is near-complete but distorted, missing the catch-plate (with a length of 46.7mm, a distorted length of 64.8mm, depth of 13.7mm, and a weight of 8.4g). The spring is complete but one half is distorted above the head. The spring coils three-times each side of the centre (with a width of 5.7mm and a diameter of 6.5mm) and the chord is tensioned by a rearward facing hook at the head. The spring is positioned behind short rectangular wings (with a width of 13.0mm). The bow is of rounded, sub-rectangular section with straight sides gradually converging to the pointed foot (with a maximum width and thickness of 5.2mm and 3.2mm respectively). There is now no discernible decoration surviving on the bow. The catch-plate survives as a jagged plate on the rear of the leg (with a length of 18mm, a thickness of 0.4mm and a surviving height of 2.1mm). The original surface has been lost with a dark brown surface corrosion.
