An incomplete Middle Saxon copper-alloy stylus. The shank is circular in section and is incomplete at the handle-end. The break is worn and the surface as a whole contains several large indentations exposing bright green corrosion. Three incised bands decorate the shank near the break. At the point where the shank meets the spatula the shank is decorated with a moulded reel with two collars above and below. The spatula is flat, triangular and corroded on both sides. One side has what appears to be an 'S'-shaped area of corrosion, and at the top is a recessed area that suggests the motif as a whole was an recessed cell perhaps containing enamel or niello. The terminal edge is smooth and worn.
The item measures 64mm in length. The spatula is 13mm wide and 19mm in length. It tapers from 3mm at the collar-end to 1mm at the edge. The shank is 4mm in diameter. Weight 7.39g.
