A complete post-Medieval cast copper-alloy buckle chape (c. 1690-c. 1720).
The frame is rectangular in cross-section. It has a curving outer edge with concave sides and a single tapering spike on the inner side of the outer edge. The base of the frame is formed of two cylinders with a space between them. The cylinders contain portions of a copper-alloy spindle. Part of a maker's name can be seen on the base of the frame: B (or D) RAE (or F)

This chape is in poor condition. The metal is reddish brown and has traces of a green patina.

Length: 32.7mm; width: 39.7mm; thickness of cylinders: 5.3mm. Weight: 9.35g.

Whitehead (1996, pages 96-97) suggests that such chapes date from c. 1690-c. 1720 AD.
