Object type certainty: Certain

An incomplete, worn and misshapen Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) cast copper-alloy strap-end (900-1100). Thomas Class E, Type 2.

This openwork strap-end, convex at the front and flat at the rear, is in anthropomorphic style. When complete it would have been tongue shaped. The design at the front is very worn and represents a standing figure facing. The details on the face are missing. Both 'arms' are outstretched with the hands on hips. The legs are incomplete due to breaks. At the stepped attachment end are two incomplete rivet holes.

Height: 41.6mm; width: 21.4mm; thickness: 2.6mm. Weight: 8.76g.

The strap-end has a green patina overall and the breaks are old.

The strap-end is similar to a Class E, Type 2 (Thomas 2004: 2, ref: 26).

Thomas, G. 2004. Late Anglo-Saxon and Viking-Age strap-ends 750-1100: Part 2. The Finds Research Group Datasheet 33. Finds Research Group AD 700-1700.
