An incomplete cast copepr-alloy Roman Hod Hill brooch. It is missing the head, terminal end of the foot, outer edge of the catchplate and the pin due to old breaks. The survivine portion of the upper bow/head is rectangular in form, oval in section and has a slight transverse groove where it meets the bow. The bow itself is rectangular in form with a convex front face and triangular wings or panels to each side. Each of these wings has double vertical flutes, and tapers to a projecting globular knob. From the base of the bow extends the foot. This is D-shaped in section, rectangular in form and tapers towards the incomplete terminal end. It has decoration on its front face comprising two large transverse ribes at the juncture with the bow. On the back face of the foot is an integrally cast but incomplete catchplate that is flat and semi-circular in form, missing its outer edge due to old breaks. The entire object measures 30.36mm in length, 23.03mm in width at bow, 7.18mm in width at neck/head, 3.02mm in thickness, and 4.31g in weight.
This is an incomplete Roman brooch of Hod Hill form. It finds similar parallels in examples published by Hattat (e.g. Hattatt, 1989: no. 317) and is of 1st century AD date, c.43-100 AD.
