LITHIC IMPLEMENT

Unique ID: IOW-EF7703

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

“Pointed” flint hand-axe of Lower Palaeolithic date (at least 40,000 years old). Length 124mm, maximum width 77mm and maximum thickness 37mm. Weight 346g.

The implement has flaking scars overall and is plano-convex in cross-section. The more convex side is orange/grey patinated, whereas the less convex side is grey/black patinated. The implement is “rolled”, that is to say it has become smoothed to a certain extent from movement within its context during the Palaeolthic period. Alternatively, it could have become smooth as a result of its mobility in a recent sea-bed environment.

Notes:

Found by Andy Butler whilst dredging for oysters off the Hampshire coast, near Lepe.
