Cast copper alloy trade weight for one ounce, circular in plan with an internal recessed face, dating from the time of George III (1760-1820) with an incuse stamp of the initials 'GR' beneath a crown with two rounded arches surmounted by a cross. The weight weighs 27.32 g or just under one ounce (0.96) which would have been made up with the small amount of metal that is missing through corrosion and the couple of nicks in the edge of the weight.
Read (1988) illustrates a 2 ounce trade weight with a similar crowned GR on page 199, no.1395, which is dated from the late 18th to the early 19th century.
Bailey (2011) illustrates a similar lead trade weight with a crowned GR on page 120, fig.76, which is dated to the reign of George III.
