An incomplete post-Medieval cast copper-alloy hooked tag (c. 1500-c. 1600). Read Class E, Type 5.
This tag was formed of three integral elements, the attachment loop, body and hook. However, the hook is missing. It is convex at the front and flat at the rear.
The attachment loop is semi-circular in plan and has a pellet at each side adjacent to the body. The body consists of an openwork moulded trefoil knot, known as a Hungerford knot and may have been decorated at the front with punched hatching prior to becoming worn.
This tag is reddish brown with specks of green corrosion products and has small areas of a black substance, possibly lacquer. The break is old and the front is worn.
Height: 20.6mm; width: 19.6mm; thickness: 2.0mm. Weight: 1.57g.
Hooked tags with a similar design have been published (Read 2008: 110, refs: 436, 437 and 438).
