Treasure number 2014 T746.

A cast openwork silver-gilt dress accessory. The body is rectangular with thin borders along the short sides and a concave thicker border along the one long side. The body is decorated with intertwining foliate design. Emerging from the centre is a larger foliate design that is sub rectangular, which takes a similar form to an oak tree profile or a large leaf. The reverse is plain and a transverse attachment bar has been soldered onto the short sides across back of the large foliate design. The bar is flat and rectangular in cross section. It is also possible to see the solder marks where an attachment hook may have been placed perpendicular to the long side.

Length: 18.12mm

Width: 16.92mm

Thickness: 6.19mm

Weight: 3.2g

Discussion: Although there are no exact parallels Read (2008) illustrates a similarly decorated hooked clasp (Read 2008, ref.513, p.125), classified as early Post-Medieval Class K, Type 1.

Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
