Incomplete cast copper alloy bar mount with two raised transverse ridges and one arm remaining which terminates in a trefoil. There was likely another trefoil terminal and waisted arm on the opposite side of the central roundel. The upper face of the roundel between the two ridges has a punched central annulet with two rows of arcs emanating from the centre to the edge, and four arcs on either side along the diagonals, creating a petal effect. The upper face of the arm has a punched annulet surrounded by four punched circles, each with a recessed circle within it, and again a row of arcs emanating out from the flower to the trefoil terminal. The terminal also has a punched annulet with a recessed circle and oblique incised lines on either side. The surface is corroded and and the edges of the mount are damaged and missing so that the complete pattern cannot be determined. There is a fragment of the leather strap that the mount was attached to still held by the three integral pointed lugs at the back of the mount, and it extends beyond the broken end of the mount, suggesting the missing arm. The leather strap is 41 mm long by 16 mm wide and about 2.5 mm thick at both ends where it is attached to the lugs.
Read (2001) illustrates similar bar mounts with trefoil terminals and punched annulets, arcs and circles on page 36, fig.21, nos.315, 317 & 320, which are dated from the 17th century.
Notes:
Found close to another similarly decorated quatrefoil mount with a leather strap still attached, CORN-3F792F, so probably part of the same set of harness mounts.
