A complete cast lead circular Russian control seal of 19th century date. This object was originally mis-identified as a cloth seal by the original recorder and has subsequently been corrected by Mr Paul Cannon. He notes:
The left hand image contains the word СМѣ.ЛА - older Russian Cyrillic for the town of Smila in Ukraine. The right hand image reads (from 7 o'clock) ГРАФОВЪ БОБРИНСКИХЪ ie Count Bobrinsky. One Alexei Grigorievich Bobrinsky was born the illegitimate son of Empress Catherine II of Russia in 1762. In 1796 he was elevated to the Russian aristocracy as a count/earl and in 1838 the family purchased the town of Smila.
The seal does not name the actual product to which it was attached. It is not a cloth seal as currently suggested. One possibility is that it relates to the sugar refineries built by family members close to Smila, though it could relate to other products.
