A Roman brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (flat wing ends type, West Midlands), cf.Mackreth 2011, 4.a-c. Plate 46 (AD c. 80-120). The copper alloy brooch is incomplete, the wings are semi-cylindrical, and terminate with incomplete wing caps. The wings are undecorated. At the upper edge of the wings and bow head there is a trace of an integral hook which would have held the chord in place. The axis bar, spring and pin are all missing. The bowhead is hump-like in profile and is undecorated. On both sides a moulding is present at the junction between the bow and the wings. The bow is sub oval in section, and gradually tapers to blunt broken point. The surface of the brooch has traces of a dark green patina with traces of a white alloy wash. It measures 23.24mm long, 15.7mm wide across the wings and weighs 5.4g.
The brooch is a Polden Hill type. Bayley and Butcher (2004:160) comment that the distribution of Polden Hill brooches are concentrated in the West Midlands and suggest they date to AD 80 to 120.
