A silver toilet article, probably an ear scoop. The spoon has a "barley-sugar" twisted shaft with a drop-shaped concave spoon. The other end of the twisted stem flattens into a strip which never appears to have been twisted, but which is now distorted. It could once have been formed into a suspension loop. The plain part of the handle tapers from 4.35mm wide at the end of the twisting, to 1.9mm wide at the rounded terminal. The possible ear scoop is 5.6mm wide, 2.24mm thick and about 1.5mm deep in the bowl. The object is 54mm long (but bent) overall and the stem is 2.25mm thick where twisted, and 0.7mm thick where it is a flat strip.
Similar items can be found on the PAS database, WILT-38DB61 (2012 T353), SOM-B38BA2 (2008 T240) and DENO-FE6EA0 (2009T467). There are good parallels from late 14th-century contexts in London (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 1758-61).
Notes:
As the object is made of silver and is more than 300 years old, it appears to be Treasure under the requirements of the 1996 Treasure Act.
