An incomplete Roman cast copper-alloy zoomorphic plate brooch (AD 100-200).
The pin is missing.
The plate is rectangular in plan. However, at one end the corners are chamfered due to breaks.
At the front it has a plain raised border enclosing a central design depicting a hound or possibly a hare running right. The ears are long and angled backwards and the tail curls upwards. The animal is proud and surrounded by decayed off-white and crazed enamel. Some of the enamel has a blue tinge. Consequently, it is possible that the enamel was originally blue prior to becoming decayed. The rear face has a pin lug and catch-plate. There are the remains of an iron pin bar in the perforation in the lug. The curled-over part that secured the pin tip is missing on the catch-plate.
The metal part of this brooch is dark green and corroded. The enamel is fragile and the breaks are old.
Length: 28.2mm; width: 11.8mm; thickness: 1.3mm; overall thickness: 5.7mm. Weight: 3.01g.
