A copper alloy late Iron Age or Roman continental brooch of uncertain type dating to the period c. 50BC - AD 75. The wings sit on either side of the head and have moulded circular knops at the tips. Each knop has an incised circumferential groove runnign down the inner edge. The lugs for the hinged pin mechanism extend from the reverse of the head. The llugs are decorated with a series of incised horizontal lines which also run across the topmost section of the pin. The pin bar and pin are intact, although the tip of the pin is slightly bent. The bow tapers from the head and is interrupted by a subcircular raised knop approximately half-way along its length with incised horizontal lines above and below. Thd bow then continues to taper towards the foot at which point it flares out into a further knop with horizontal lines above and below. The foot then tapers and terminates in an old break. The catchplate extends from the reverse of the lower knop.
The brooch measures 47.88mm in length, 23.41mm maximum width, 2.51mm minimum width, 13.49mm maximim thickness, 2.88mm minimum thickness and weighs 13.61g.
