A fragment of a cast, copper alloy Roman brooch of the dragonesque type, dating from AD 75-175. It can be classified as Mackreth Dragonesque type 2 (no enamel). The fragment consists of the central body of the brooch, with both terminals missing. It is decorated with a central circular domed boss surrounded by a grooved ring. Two curved grooves radiate from the boss on each side. The brooch is 29.4mm long, 16.7mm wide and 4.6mm thick. 6.04g. There are examples of dragonesque brooches, though none of this design, in Hattat's Visual Catalogue of Ancient Brooches, figure 210, and Mackreth (2011), Plate 129. Mackreth notes that dragonesque broochs have a strong concentration in Yorkshire.
