WEIGHT

Unique ID: WMID-507D2A

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete lead or lead alloy standing / hexagonal / pyramidal weight, of Medieval to Post Medieval dating (AD 1200 to AD 1600).

The weight has a circular base, with a central circular depression. The sides of the weight have been facetted, forming six distinct sides. The sides gradually taper towards the top. An incomplete suspension loop is present at the top of the weight.

It measures 22.9 mm in height, 17.8 mm wide and 19.7 mm thick. It weighs 34.1 g or 1.20 oz.

It is a light to mid grey colour, with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.

Several similar pyramidal / hexagonal weights have been recorded on the PAS database including LEIC-7EFD23, LEIC-D9C2D0, YORYM-F52F85, WILT-ECEC12, SF-0B04D3 and SF-D59B31. All are considered to be Medieval in dating (AD 1200 to AD 1600).

Class: standing / hexagonal / pyramidal
