A copper alloy Roman trumpet brooch of Mackreth's type 1.5a dating from AD 75 - 175. The lower bow and foot are missing, but the break is patinated. The head is flattened and plain, with a spring of seven turns behind. Most of the pin is missing. The spring is wound round a sheet copper alloy sleeve. The head loop is also missing. The acanthus button or knop is discoidal and is gently moulded with petals at the top and bottom. The upper bow is decorated with two incised bands to form a double collar above the knop. The brooch has a smooth green patina. It is 28.6mm long, 21.81mm wide and 15.47mm thick. 14.87g. Compare number 12368 in plate 83 on page 86 of Mackreth (2011), Brooches in Late Iron Age and Roman Britain, Volume 2, which is similar but more strongly moulded. See also page 122 in Volume 1 where type 1.5a brooches are discussed.
