FINGER RING

Unique ID: LVPL-3EDB47

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A cast copper alloy finger ring of Roman date. The object has an oval bezel within which sits an oval intaglio positioned centrally. The shoulders of the ring are triangular in shape, and are decorated with eight ridges which taper to a point. The hoop is missing below the shoulders with each shoulder terminating with a break. The internal face of the object is undecorated however file marks are visible. The intaglio is engraved with a worn motif, possibly a bust facing right on dark blue/black glass. The surface of the intaglio is pitted and one edge is damaged where a large oval chip has been removed. The object has a mid-green patina and is in fair condition. This finger ring is similar in style to that of a Guiraud type 3 or a Henig type VIII, an intaglio finger ring with decorated triangular shoulders. These are consistent with a Late 2nd to Early 3rd Century AD dating.
