An incomplete lead alloy flat seal matrix, of Late Medieval dating (c. AD 1250 - c. AD 1350).
The seal matrix has a circular die, with a sub circular tab handle. The handle has a rectangular cross section. The casting of the handle as a ridge, acts as an orientation device to ensure that the seal matrix is placed the right way up in the wax.
The die depicts a seven pointed star, with a plain engraved border between it and the inscription. The legend can be read but may be illegible in nature. Legible letters include S[ ]hON X. The inscription starts with a plain cross.
The seal matrix has a diameter of 24.2 mm and is 6.7 mm thick. It weighs 10.7 g.
The seal matrix is a light to mid grey colour, with an uneven surface patina present. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.
