JETTON

Unique ID: WMID-E7AEDC

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete copper alloy jetton, probably similar to that of the English Wardrobe, between AD 1344 and AD 1400.

The obverse seems to depict a lion rampant, probably with two tails, within an arched tressure. Legend is illegible. The reverse depicts a probable cross fleuretty with central void and rampart lion in each angle, within an arched tressure. Legend is illegible. Jetton exhibits a partial fold.

Diameter: 23.0 mm
Thickness: 1.1 mm
Weight: 1.8 g.

The jetton is a mid green colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.

Rob Webley (FLO - Somerset) comments: This one is like those attributed to Guelders, but is in fact English . It can be compared with Mitchiner 255 and 255a (p. 119), depending on estimation of the original module. The reverse is probably an unpublished variant, so it is likely to be a new combination.
